Emerald Ash Borer
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive exotic beetle species (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) which was first discovered in southeastern Michigan in the summer of 2002. Because it is not native to North America our ash trees have not built up an immunity to this insect. It is believed that the Emerald Ash Borer arrived via wood cargo crates from its native home in Asia. Since 2002, it is estimated that the EAB has already wiped out more than 30 million ash trees in southeastern Michigan and has the potential to wipe out more than 700 million trees.
